THE NANCE

Written by Douglas Carter Beane
directed by Rick Yaconis

March 3rd, 2017 through April 2nd, 2017

SYNOPSIS

In the 1930's, burlesque impresarios welcomed hilarious comics and musical parodies to their decidely lowbrow niche. A headlined called "the nance" - usually played by a straight man - was a stereotypically campy homosexual and master of the double entendre. THE NANCE recreates the naughty, raucous world of the burlesque heyday and tells the backstage story of Chauncey Miles (Warren Sherrill) and his fellow performers. In a time when it was easy to play gay, but dangerous to be gay, Chauncey's uproarious antics on the stage stand in marked contrast to his offstage life.
